Looking for the best manhwa sites? For most series, WEBTOON is the best place to read manhwa for free, and Tappytoon, Lezhin, Manta and the other official sites cover what WEBTOON doesn't. When a series has no English release, or the English one is far behind Korea, read the chapter on the Korean site and translate it with OpenToon, a phone app for iOS and Android that translates manhwa into English or 50+ other languages.
This guide sorts manhwa reading sites by what you need: free reading, official English releases, the Korean originals, sites that won't bury you in pop-ups, and what to do when nobody has translated your series.
Quick answer: which manhwa site should you use?
- Want it free? WEBTOON. Most of its catalog is free, and other official sites give you the first chapters free.
- Want a specific licensed series in English? Use the official site that carries it: WEBTOON, Tappytoon, Lezhin, Manta, Pocket Comics, Toomics or Tapas.
- Want romance or BL? Tappytoon, Lezhin and Manta in English. Bomtoon and Ridibooks in Korean.
- Want the newest chapters first? The Korean originals: Naver, Kakao, Ridibooks, Lezhin KR and Bomtoon.
- Series not in English, or English is behind? Open the chapter on the Korean site, paste its URL into OpenToon on your phone, and read it in English.

What makes a good manhwa site?
There's no single best site to read manhwa, because no site has every series. Korean publishers license each title to one or two English platforms, so the series you want decides the site. After that, check:
- Catalog. Some sites lean into action and fantasy, others into romance fantasy, BL or mature titles.
- Pricing. Free chapters, wait-until-free timers, coins per chapter or a subscription. Most mix a few.
- How far behind Korea it is. English releases often trail the Korean one by dozens of chapters.
- Whether it's official. Official sites pay the creators and don't vanish overnight. More on that below.
Where can you read manhwa for free?
You can read a lot of manhwa free without going near a pirate site:
- WEBTOON is the most generous. Much of the catalog is free, and you only pay to read newer episodes early with Fast Pass. Some completed series use Daily Pass, a wait-until-free unlock.
- Wait-until-free on Tapas, Tappytoon and the Korean Kakao sites unlocks chapters on a timer, so you can read whole series free if you're patient.
- First chapters free. Almost every paid site lets you try the opening chapters of a series before you pay.
- Korean sites like Naver Webtoon run many free daily series, though they're in Korean. The translation section below covers that.
No legal site gives you the newest chapter of a paid series free on the day it comes out.
Which official English manhwa sites are best?
Here's what each official English site is best for:
- WEBTOON. Best overall. Naver's global site has the biggest free catalog and runs in other languages too, including Spanish, French, German, Thai and Indonesian.
- Tappytoon. Best for romance fantasy, drama and BL. Mostly pay per chapter, with some free chapters and promos.
- Lezhin (English). Best for mature titles: BL, thriller, horror and adult romance. The Korean side usually has more chapters, earlier.
- Manta. Best if you'd rather pay one subscription. Ridi's English service, heavy on romance.
- Pocket Comics. Comico's English service, with manhwa and some manga.
- Toomics. Mature titles with a paid VIP membership.
- Tapas. Licensed Kakao hits next to its own originals. It may be closing down soon, so check whether your series is on another official site too.
Our legal manhwa reading sites guide goes through each of these in more detail, including how coins and wait-until-free work on each.
Where do you read Korean originals?
Every series on the English sites started on a Korean platform, and that's where the newest chapters always come out first:
- Naver Webtoon and Naver Series. Where most webtoons debut.
- KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon. A lot of action, romance and isekai hits.
- Ridibooks. Big for BL and drama.
- Lezhin KR. Mature and BL, ahead of the English side.
- Bomtoon. BL and romance.
They're official and legal, and their catalogs are far bigger than any English site's. The catch is that everything is in Korean. Our manhwa raw sites guide covers each platform, and there are separate guides for Korean webtoon raws and adult manhwa raws. If you read Chinese manhua as well, see manhua raw sites.
Which manhwa sites are safe?
The safe websites to read manhwa are the official ones. The free aggregator sites that top Reddit threads re-host scanlations without the publisher's permission, and they come with real downsides:
- Malware ads and fake download buttons. Redirects and pop-ups are how those sites make money.
- Domains that disappear. Pirate sites hop domains and point you to "mirrors", and your history and bookmarks go with them.
- Creators don't get paid. Series that do badly on official platforms get shorter runs and fewer licensed translations.
A quick way to check a site: look for a real company with terms of service, series that credit the Korean publisher, and an actual business model like coins, subscriptions or wait-until-free. If every newest chapter is free with no account and the page credits a fan group, it isn't official.
What if your manhwa has no English release?
English sites license only a fraction of what runs in Korea, licensed series fall behind the Korean release, and plenty of niche romance, BL and older titles never get licensed at all.
The legal fix is to read the Korean chapter and translate it on your phone. OpenToon is a mobile app for iOS and Android that translates manga, manhwa, manhua and webtoons into 50+ languages. You paste a chapter URL or import screenshots, and it translates the speech bubbles with AI built for comics.
- Find the chapter on the Korean site. Naver, Kakao Webtoon, Ridibooks or Bomtoon. Read the free chapters, or buy the paid ones there.
- Copy the chapter URL and paste it into OpenToon. Get the app on the App Store or Google Play. You can also browse to the chapter in OpenToon's built-in viewer, or import screenshots instead of a link.
- Pick your language. English, or any of 50+ others.
- Read. OpenToon translates every speech bubble. Tap a bubble to see the original Korean, and edit it if you'd prefer a different reading.
The same steps work when the English release is behind: read the official English chapters, then switch to the Korean site for the chapters English hasn't reached yet. Translated chapters are saved on your device for re-reading. OpenToon doesn't host or re-upload comics, and the creator still gets paid on the site where you read the chapter.
There's a free trial so you can read full chapters first, then coin packs or a subscription. The pricing page has the details, and the supported sites list shows where you can import from. For a full walkthrough, see how to translate manhwa to English.
When an official English release exists, it's still the better read, with professional translation and lettering. OpenToon is for the chapters it doesn't have yet.
Sites or apps?
Most manhwa sites also have an app, and vertical scrolling works best on a phone anyway. If you mostly read on your phone, our best manhwa apps guide covers the official readers app by app. Comparing translators? See the best manga translator app.
FAQ
What is the best site to read manhwa? For English readers, WEBTOON is the best place to start, with the biggest free catalog. Tappytoon, Lezhin, Manta, Pocket Comics and Toomics carry licensed manhwa with their own genre focus. The best manhwa site for you is the one that officially carries your series.
What are the best free sites to read manhwa? WEBTOON is the most generous free option. Wait-until-free lets you read many series without paying, and most paid sites give you the first chapters free. The newest chapters of paid series are rarely free on day one.
Is a webtoon the same as manhwa? Manhwa is the Korean word for comics. Webtoon is the vertical-scroll digital format most Korean comics now use, and WEBTOON is also the name of Naver's platform. Most Korean webtoons are manhwa, but WEBTOON also publishes comics from creators in other countries.
Are manhwa sites on Reddit safe? The sites Reddit threads recommend are often aggregators that re-host scanlations. They don't pay creators, and they're where the malware ads, fake download buttons and sudden shutdowns happen. The official sites in this guide are the safe option.
Where can I read manhwa that isn't in English? Read the official Korean chapter on Naver, Kakao Webtoon, Ridibooks or Bomtoon, then paste the chapter URL into OpenToon on iOS or Android to read it in English or 50+ other languages. Nothing is re-hosted, and the creator gets paid on the Korean site.
Where can I read manhua for free? Chinese manhua comes out first on official sites like Kuaikan Manhua and Tencent, many with free chapters. They're in Chinese, and OpenToon translates them the same way it does Korean manhwa. See manhua raw sites.
To summarize
